Who We Are
The National Gardening Association is a nonprofit organization established in 1972 to help gardeners, and to help people through gardening. More than 30 years later, we are still doing both. While our goals have been consistent over time, how we achieve them has shifted in response to a socially, culturally, and technologically changing world.

No other organization has focused as consistently for as long on helping people become better gardeners and educators by providing the best information available and offering meaningful networking opportunities. Over the years, we've used every medium available: National Gardening magazine, books, radio, and, since 1996, the Internet, to help beginners get started and keep old pros inspired.

Our Mission

NGA's mission is to renew the fundamental links between people, plants, and the Earth. Through exemplary programs in schools and communities nationwide, we promote environmental stewardship, advance standards-based learning and science literacy, and create partnerships that restore and enhance communities.

Membership
In 2002 we returned to our roots as a member organization. As members of NGA, gardeners and educators join a national network of people who believe in the power of gardening to transform environments, individuals and communities. Members receive a variety of benefits include members-only, full-color e-mail newsletters; answers from experts to their gardening questions; and discounts at our online stores, the NGA Garden Shop and Gardening with Kids store. Member dues, as well as store profits, are used to support our award-winning educational programs.

Web Sites
Our sister Web sites, www.garden.org and www.kidsgardening.com are hubs where gardeners and educators find information, inspiration, and community. Combined, they feature 2,000 articles, 30,000 FAQs, how-to projects, online courses, seed swaps, a school garden registry, and much more. Visitors can sign up for free e-newsletters, including NGA's Regional Gardening Reports, with the latest gardening news and tips for 12 regions. The online NGA Garden Shop and Gardening with Kids stores offer easy shopping for quality plants, supplies, gifts, and educational resources. All store profits support NGA's educational programs. Educational Programs
NGA has long been recognized as a national leader in garden-based education. This includes providing horticultural and teaching expertise, resources, and networking opportunities to help kids in schools and communities grow. Our Youth Garden Grants program, begun in 1982, has helped more than 1.2 million youngsters reap the rewards and vital life lessons that green oases offer. With support from industry sponsors, we now offer an array of grants and awards that recognize exemplary school and community garden projects and leaders and that help launch new programs. Since 1990, our award-winning GrowLab Science Program has been implemented in 25,000 classrooms. In recent years, we have created international programs so youngsters could exchange gardening and lifestyle information, images, and data with peers in other cultures.

We remain committed to providing educational programs, publications, and resources to help educators and parents use gardens and habitats to:

  • meet standards and teaching goals
  • cultivate kids' interest in living things
  • inspire science and cultural literacy
  • build youngsters' confidence as problem solvers
  • promote teamwork and collaborative learning, locally and globally
  • cultivate environmental responsibility
Industry Research
Since 1973, we have worked with the Gallup Organization (and now the Harris Organization) to provide market research information for the lawn, garden, and nursery industries.
